Native Californian Al Martinez spent more than five decades as a journalist, shared a 1984 Pulitzer Prize for Meritorious Public Service for a series on the Southern California Latino community, and earned the President’s Award for Excellence from the Los Angeles Press Club. He authored seven books and dozens of television screenplays.

Al passed away in January 2015 after a long (and of course wittily self-documented) battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Read more about Al in Valerie Nelson's Los Angeles Times obituary, in Annemarie Donkin's terrific Topanga Messenger article "Remembering Al Martinez", and in the Al Martinez papers at the Huntington Library.
